Lara Messersmith-Glavin will be appearing at Village Books to talk about memory, alternative narrative forms, and the power of talismanic objects as she reads from her new book, Spirit Things, the latest in the Alaska Literary Series from UA Press. This event is hosted in collaboration with the North Cascades Institute as part of their Nature of Writing series.
Attendees will be encouraged to explore their own relationships to “spirit things.” Spirit Things recounts stories of navigation, synesthesia, gender, and violence against the backdrop of the Alaskan fishing industry. Anchorage Daily News calls it, “a book to love and cherish.” Lara grew up fishing in the salmon fleet around Kodiak Island, though now she is a writer, educator, and performer based in Portland, Oregon.
