Pursuing Justice: The proposed new jail and diversion programs

In November 2023, voters passed for the largest public works project in the history of Whatcom County: construction of a new jail supported by strong behavioral health and diversion programs. Our May program will detail the successes and challenges to implementing these critical improvements as Whatcom County pursues justice. Panelists will analyze the treatment and diversion programs in use today and those being designed for a future facility and provide an update to the jail planning process.

Panelists: • Director of the Public Defender’s Office, Starck Follis • County Councilperson Barry Buchanan • Whatcom County Deputy Executive, Kayla Schott-Bresler

We hope you’ll join us for this important discussion.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
