U.S. CITIZENS 

Adults (16 and older) require one of the following documents: 

• Passport
• U.S. Passport Card
• REAL ID
• Enhanced Driver’s License (only available in certain states)
• Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST) Card
• Specific military documents
• Form I-872 American Indian Card, or (when available) Enhanced Tribal Card 

Children* (15 and younger) require one of the following documents: 

• Proof of citizenship (such as original or copy of Birth Certificate or Naturalization Certificate)
• Enhanced Government-issued photo I.D. (issued in some states)
• Passport
• U.S. Passport Card

*If children are not traveling with both parents, a written statement is required from the parent/guardian stating travel is authorized.

CANADIAN CITIZENS

As per the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), Canadian citizens aged 16 years and older must present one of the following documents when entering the United States by land or water:

• a valid passport
• a Trusted Traveler Program card
• an enhanced driver’s license (EDL) or enhanced identification card (EIC) from a province or territory where a U.S. approved EDL/EIC program has been implemented
• a Secure Certificate of Indian Status

CHILDREN (15 and younger) require one of the following documents:

• a passport
• an original or a copy of a birth certificate
• an original Canadian citizenship certificate

• Flying into Canada? You might need an Electronic travel authorization (eTA) before booking your flight. You will need an eTA if you’re a:
  • Visa-exempt foreign national and you’re flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport
  • As a visa-exempt foreign national, you do NOT need an eTA (or a visitor visa) when arriving by car, bus, train or boat (including a cruise ship).
  • You may be eligible to apply for an eTA (instead of a visitor visa) if you’re a:
    • Citizen from select visa-required countries and you’re travelling to Canada by air.
    • However, you still need visitor visa (not an eTA) when arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including a cruise ship.
  • Apply for your eTA here.

• Canadian citizens travelling by air to the United States must present one of the following documents:
  • a passport, which must be valid for the duration of their stay
  • a valid NEXUS card, used at self-serve kiosks at designated airport.
    • This requirement applies to all Canadian citizens, including children, traveling by air to or even just transiting through the United States.

• Pet food restrictions vary depending on current restrictions. Recommend only bringing small amounts in original package.

Save time at the border by navigating to designated Ready Lanes and having your eligible card ready to show. Eligible cards include:

• U.S. Passport Cards
• Enhanced Driver’s Licenses
• Enhanced Tribal Cards
• Enhanced Border Crossing Cards
• Enhanced Permanent Resident Cards
• Trusted Traveler Program (NEXUS, SENTRI, Global Entry or FAST) cards.
• For a vehicle or group of pedestrians to be Ready Lane eligible, all travelers 16 years-old and older must be carrying a Ready Lane-eligible card.

You can make your customs and immigration declaration using Advance Declaration in the ArriveCAN app before you fly into one of Canada’s participating airports. 

Note: At this time, travelers cannot use the Advance Declaration with NEXUS kiosks.
