Book Talk - Black Gold, The Rise, Reign and Fall of American Coal

Seattle journalist Bob Wyss will be speaking at Village Books, in Bellingham Nov. 7 on his new book, “Black Gold, The Rise, Reign and Fall of American Coal” and how President Trump’s plans to bring back coal will cause havoc with everything from the environment to electricity prices.

Black Gold is an environmental history of a product that was once familiar in every Washington home. Coal not only warmed winter’s chill it was the spark that powered railroads, the mighty steel and other industries, and it was the primary source that eventually created the American empire. However, America paid a price for burning coal, it was dirty and dangerous, and today it threatens to dangerously overheat the planet.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
