WNPS Koma Kulshan Chapter Meeting: Why Plant Names Change

The Koma Kulshan Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society is holding their November meeting. Join for a presentation from Linda Ann Vorobik entitled Why Plant Names Change: Reflections upon Botanical Nomenclature, Other Biological Lessons, and The Beauty of Plants.

Through her 40 plus year career as a botanist, professor, and botanical illustrator, Linda has seen plant names change and even change back again. Most of us have learned that the scientific binomial is more reliable than the common name given to a plant, but with the storm of taxonomic revisions and resulting name changes, many of us have had doubts! But do not fear, this is just science in action. In this presentation, Linda includes beautiful landscapes, wildflower closeups, and botanical watercolors of the plants and from the places that Linda has encountered throughout the west. She uses this imagery as a way to weave through the less enchanting story of how plants are named, and why the names change.

Starts: November 19, 2025

Time: 7 p.m.

Location: RE Store Sustainable Living Center Education Room

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
