Semiahmoo Spit is a great place to start your adventure, whether you're into boating, fishing, walking, biking, inline skating, birding, or simply hanging out on the beach. Semiahmoo Park, which encompasses much of Semihamoo Spit, is a great place for walking, beach combing, birding, or watching the sunset (more on those last two below!)
Walk, jog, or bike the Coast Millenium Trail, a fully paved 0.8 mile path that offers sweeping views of Mt. Baker, the Twin Sisters, Drayton Harbor, and the Straight of Georgia.
The park is also home to the Alaska Packers Association Museum, which preserves the history of the area's fishing and canning days. The museum is located in an original cannery building and showcases a scale model fish trap, antique machinery, a gallery of historic photos, and an original 29-foot Bristol Bay sailboat.
The serene waterways, estuaries, and tide pools around Semiahmoo attract birds year-round and makes the area a hot spot for birders. In fact, the North Cascades Audubon Society identifies the Drayton Harbor/Semiahmoo Bay area as one of 53 Important Bird Areas in the state of Washington.
Birders can spot sea ducks, grebes, blue herons, bald eagles, loons, and many more species of bird, particularly during the winter.
Each spring, the area hosts the the Wings Over Water Northwest Birding Festival, a weekend packed full of fun-filled activities for avid birders, novices, and children alike. The festival takes place at Blaine Pavilion Community Center, Blaine Marina Park, Semiahmoo Spit, and Birch Bay.
The beaches along Semiahmoo Spit are a great place to hunker down and watch the sun set over the Straight of Georgia.
If you prefer your sunsets with dinner, pack a picnic or head to Packers Kitchen + Bar at Semiahmoo Resort. You don't have to be a guest to eat there and enjoy waterfront views along with seafood (yes, they have oysters!), hand-crafted pizzas, and other local specialties.
