Historic Walking Tours

Visit popular neighborhoods in Bellingham, WA and learn about local history all at the same time! These self guided walking tours are easy to use, available on your mobile device, and offer insights into historic districts (Downtown Bellingham, Historic Fairhaven, and Sehome).

These walking tours travel through a variety of public spaces, following sidewalks and alleyways and occasionally over uneven ground. Things to consider when walking:

  • Wear comfortable shoes and watch where you step,
  • Always use crosswalks and be alert when crossing streets.
  • Take breaks as needed. Visit one of the many cafes and retail shops along the tour, stop by the library or have a picnic at a park.

Where To Get Printed Tour Booklets

Full printed booklets for all three walking tours are available for purchase at Village Books and the Whatcom Museum for $5 each. All proceeds go to support the Whatcom Museum Foundation. Photos and information about the history of Fairhaven and Bellingham was provided by Jeff Jewell, Whatcom Museum Photo Archives Historian.

Interactive maps and digital versions of the booklets are provided here by the City of Bellingham.

From museums in downtown Bellingham, WA to historic locations like Peace Arch State Park in Blaine, WA, there are many ways to keep history enthusiasts well entertained.

The Fairhaven Historic Walking Tour has been made possible by the City of BellinghamBellingham Whatcom County Tourism, the Fairhaven Association, and with Federal funds from the National Park Service Department of the Interior, administered by the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP).

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
