Naturalist Hike - Saplings & Sapsuckers with Northwest Natura

This will be a slow “hike” with minimal elevation gain. Come out to “get your steps in” while learning about flora and fauna from local botanist and naturalist, Jazmen Yoder of Northwest Natura. This course is focused on how to identify young native trees which inevitably gets us talking about patterns in plant families, admiring minutia, and observing the wildlife sign we may see on young trees such as feeding sign from sapsucker, elk, deer, and beaver.

We’ll be sure to talk about anything and everything we find on the trail if it interests the group - such as mushrooms, lichens, tracks, sign, or other curiosities. Each thing we ID will be followed up with interesting information beyond how to identify it, but also the connected historical significance, human uses, and ecological roles. Please register via the event website.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
