The Art and Science of Creating Prints

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:Wednesday, April 15, 12:00pm

This class is for anyone who has ever wondered why a print of their work doesn’t match the original. Printing is both an art and a science. Since 2012, I’ve worked as a print professional and university-level print educator, as well as a color corrector for Chelsea Green Publishing. I print my own photographic work and also assist my wife, a cartoonist and natural science illustrator, with her print production.

In this 4-hour deep dive, we’ll cover the entire printing process: how printing works, the history and technology behind it, how to build a color-managed workflow, and how to properly edit and prepare digital files for print before sending them to a printer. This class is designed for those already actively printing their work and ready to go deeper. If you have technical questions about specific printing challenges, this is the place to bring them.

Each student will submit a digital file at the start of class. These files—along with some of my own photographs—will be used as real-world examples during the editing and adjustment portion. Every image will be handled with care and professional respect.

CLASS FEES: $60

I welcome everyone interested in the topic, but the class is structured for people who are already actively engaged in printing their work and are ready to dive into the deeper end of the pool.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
