Encaustic Project: Altered Photography

REGISTRATION DEADLINE Friday, May 1, 12:00pm

Turn a family photograph (or any special photo) into a one-of-a-kind memento using the ancient medium of Encaustic, painting with beeswax. Learn how to properly attach a photograph to a wooden surface and which archival glues to use. Then work over the photo with beeswax. Incorporate mixed-media techniques to build layers of meaning, including handwriting, collage work, incising lines, stamping words or letters, etc.

Beeswax is a naturally archival medium, and photographs properly sealed in encaustic paintings create durable, beautiful, one-of-a-kind gifts or mementos.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
