BCMS at Hotel Leo: Rebecca Clarke Lecture

Join the Bellingham Chamber Music Society for a special event as we launch our 5th season! Paying tribute to four composers featured in Leah Broad’s book Quartet: How Four Women Challenged the Music World, we will be joined by Christopher Johnson, composer Rebecca Clarke’s great-nephew for a lecture on Saturday September 26th 2026 from 2-4pm in the Hotel Leo’s Social Lounge.

Johnson worked with Clarke to catalogue her compositions in the last decade of her life and runs the official Rebecca Clarke website, https://rebeccaclarkecomposer.com

He will bring to life this musician and composer who Gramophone called “one of the very best of her time,” and “almost certainly the best composer of any period to have also been a woman.” The BCMS event is free of charge - but a ticket is required.

Starts: September 26, 2026

Time: 2 - 4 p.m.

Admission: Free!

Location: Hotel Leo - Social Lounge

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
