Foraging the Forest Floor Workshop: Framing Nature’s Small Wonders

This workshop is your pre-holiday sanctuary: no pressure to sketch or paint, just an invitation to slow down and see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Together, we’ll forage and select the best natural elements and arrange them into striking, modern 3D shadow boxes that bring the quiet energy of the woods into your home.

You’ll design and create two custom shadow boxes: one to keep, one to give. Learn to stain raw pine for a warm, finished look. Master visual balance using organic textures and shapes. Work with dried flowers, pebbles, shells, birch bark, twigs, and grasses. Layer in colorful yarn, glass tiles, and ceramic pieces. Add dried citrus peel for a cozy, wintry scent.

Want it on the wall instead of the shelf? We’ll attach a twine handle, so your shadow box can hang. These make beautiful, personal Thanksgiving tokens for the people you love.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
