Bellingham Hiker Heather Anderson Named National Geographic 2019 Adventurer of the Year

It took Heather Anderson 251 days to complete the Triple Crown - that's thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail.

On November 8, Anderson - whose trail name is "Anish" - became the first woman to hike the nearly 8,000 miles in a single calendar year. Only five others, all men, have completed the Triple Crown in under 365 days.

The feat earned her the title of National Geographic's Adventurer of the year for 2019.

With 28,000 miles to her name, National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Heather Anderson has made history on America's most iconic trails. I ASK HEATHER “Anish” Anderson if she is a spiritual person. I know it must take more than pure physical strength to will someone to walk 8,000 trail miles in 251 days. I have also heard that she does not like a lot of fanfare—such as being named a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year—and I want to give her a question that will resonate deeper than just asking how she pulled it off. She answers simply, “yes.” Nothing more. No explanation.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
