Celebrate Eat Local Month this August with a Virtual Farm Tour, Farm Stand Loop, and Weekly Celebrations

Sustainable Connections is hosting a month-long celebration in Whatcom County this August to explore and enjoy the bounty of local food with an annual Eat Local Month celebration. Each week, the community is invited to celebrate four industries of our region’s local food system: farmers, restaurants, markets, and seafood producers.

Farm Week: August 1–8

Whatcom County Virtual Farm Tour

When: Thursday, August 6, 6 p.m.
Cost: Free
VIP pass: $15 donation with exclusive freebies and offers at farms featured in August.
Description: Meet your farmers, and learn how to GET A TASTE! Join us for our keynote event, a virtual Whatcom County Farm Tour, right from the comfort of your own home, followed by a conversation with local farmers answering questions from the community, and sharing their stories, struggles, and joys of farming.

Farm Stand Loop

When: August-September
Cost: Free
Description: Opportunities for exploring farm-fresh flavors and experiences will be provided with a Local Farm Stand Loop — a chance to get out of the house, take a short drive using a guide to farms that will be open to the public during the months of August and September with u-pick, farm stands, and pop-up markets — a much needed escape with some fresh air and fresh flavors.

Restaurant Week: August 9–15

Watch the Eat Local Month video illustrating the relationship our local chefs and restaurateurs have with local farms, fishers, ranchers and the community. Meet local chefs and restauranteurs and learn how to GET A TASTE of their seasonal Eat Local Month specials crafted with fresh ingredients from local farms and food producers.

Market Week: August 16–22

Get to know your local farmers markets and grocers and GET A TASTE of what is fresh, along with special offers and recipes to try at home.

Seafood Week: August 23–29

Meet your local fishers, learn about our region’s rich seafood offerings, and GET A TASTE! For the past 12 years, Sustainable Connections has hosted Eat Local Month events and activities to connect people with food that is grown, raised, harvested, and made right here in Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, and Island counties. In response to the effects of the COVID-19 crisis, Sustainable Connections is reimagining Eat Local Month in a way that promotes the safety and wellbeing of our community, while also creating new opportunities for fun and community connection.

The community is encouraged to learn more about Eat Local Month, get a digital passport, and enter to win tasty local food prizes, by visiting eatlocalfirst.org for details.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
