Number 4 Nationally-Ranked Vikings Back in Regatta Action

The Western Washington University rowing team returns to competition this weekend at the Husky Open on Montlake Cut in Seattle.

The No. 4 nationally-ranked Vikings will race a pair of four-oared boats and one Varsity 8+ entry in the Husky Open. Racing on Montlake Cut is scheduled to begin at 8 am with the Vikings in action at 8:20 am (V4+) and 8:40 am (V8+).

WWU opened the season with a solid performance March 5 at the PLU Invitational and spent spring break preparing for a grueling regatta schedule over the next two months. Following the Husky Open, WWU will compete against GNAC rivals Seattle Pacific and Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday, April 9 on the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

The Vikings are ranked No. 4 in the third regular season edition of the NCAA II Pocock CRCA Poll presented by USRowing. The top eight teams in NCAA II features all four GNAC schools with No. 1 Central Oklahoma, No. 4 WWU, No. 6 Seattle Pacific and No. 7 Cal Poly Humboldt.

Led by 24-year head coach John Fuchs, the Husky Open is the second of five regular-season regattas leading up to the GNAC Championships on May 14 in Dexter, Oregon and the NCAA Championships May 27-29 in Sarasota, Florida. The full 2022 season schedule can be viewed online at

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
