Registration Is Now Open for the Whatcom Marine Research Symposium

The Whatcom Watersheds Information Network (WWIN) will host a virtual Whatcom Marine Research Symposium on Wednesday, February 23. This free event will feature presentations on current marine research and recovery projects to promote a better understanding of current conditions, inform future research, and support resource management of Whatcom County marine waters and shorelines.

The symposium will feature two keynote speakers—Nooksack Elder and Tribal Storyteller Tammy Cooper-Woodrich and Washington State Poet Laureate and Lummi Tribal member Rena Priest. It will also include eight presentations on new research covering a wide range of topics relevant to Whatcom County area marine waters and nearshore ecosystems. The symposium is free and will be delivered online as a Zoom Conference.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
