Ski to Sea 50th Anniversary in 2023

Whatcom Events is pleased to announce that registration for the 50th Anniversary of the Ski to Sea Race is open as of January 1st.  The big race is Sunday, May 28th and we currently have 44 teams registered.

Due to inflation and increasing costs of services, we have raised the team price for the first time since 2014.  The price increase is $65 per team ($8.13 per racer) making current pricing $664 per team during this early bird period.  Team price increases $50 to $714 on March 1. Registration is open on our website, or directly through the Pacific Multisports (our registration and timing provider) website.

50 teams from 50 states for 50 years challenge

To help us celebrate 50 years, we hope to have a full team or team member represented from all 50 states! Currently we have a team from seven states (MT, AK, CO, ID, NJ, OR and WA) and the District of Columbia.

Since 2011 when Whatcom Events took over hosting the race from the Bellingham Chamber of Commerce, we have had a participant from 41 of the 50 states and we will use our database as a jumping off point to contact racers from out-of-state.

The states that have not been represented over the past 11 years are AR, DE, KY, MS, ND, NE, RI, SD, and WV. We will ask racers, sponsors, volunteers, the media, and the community at large to help us with exposure to these and all states.

How it will work.

  • Teams that have 100% of their racers from out-of-state will be given top priority for a free team entry.
  • For the Washington team, we had a lottery drawing on Friday, December 30th and returning team The Tall, The Short and The Ugly won the opportunity to represent Washington.
  • On Wednesday, February 15th we will open entry up to teams that have at least one racer from any of the states not represented.
  • If a team has more than 50% (5 – 8 racers) of participants from an unrepresented state, they will get free entry. If a team has less than 50% (1 – 4 racers), they will get 50% off the entry fee.
  • All teams will be awarded free or discounted entry fees on a first come, first serve basis by emailing info@skitosea.com.
  • Teams chosen will be sent a code for a free or discounted team.
  • Teams from the 50 states will be given bib numbers 1-51 so racers on the course and the media can identify them.

We are looking forward to a successful event in 2023.  Please contact me directly if you’d like to discuss any items included in this press release in greater detail or if you would like story leads.  We are collecting names of racers who have raced more than 20 years (some as many as 40 years) and many have great stories to tell.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
