Whatcom Community College Athletics Invites You to the 2nd Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser

Whatcom Community College will host its 2nd annual golf tournament fundraiser on Thursday, June 9, 2022, at the Sudden Valley Golf and Country Club. All proceeds raised at the Orca Golf Classic will support WCC student-athletes and the College’s seven varsity athletic programs.

Last year’s tournament raised over $40,000 to support student-athletes, with 32 teams and a total of 128 golfers.  Jeffrey Beha, Athletics Coordinator, says that while the tournament is fun for everyone, there is a deeper purpose to the event. “Raising funds for our student athletes is essential as they become the next generation of leaders in Whatcom County.”

Miannah Davies, a freshman Women’s Basketball player from Kuna, Idaho says, “Being on scholarship at Whatcom has given me the peace of mind to be able to really focus on my studies and playing basketball.  Knowing that some of my schooling costs are already paid for takes a huge weight off my shoulders and motivates me to work hard in school and on the court. This year we made it to the elite eight and I can’t wait to see what next year brings.”

“Whatcom Community College is proud to support our student athletes success on the field of competition, in the classroom, and in life.   We look forward to celebrating them at this year’s Orca Golf Classic”, said Dr. Kathi Hiyane-Brown, WCC’s president.

The event includes lunch and dinner for all the participants, as well as 18 holes of golf and contests with prizes throughout the course.  The entry fee is $800 per team of four players or $200 per individual.  “Hole Sponsorships” are available for $250.  There are also a variety of other ways businesses can support the event as a sponsor.  For questions regarding the event, please contact Jeffrey Beha at jbeha@whatcom.edu or 360-383-3107.

WCC has a long history of successful athletic programs, with this year’s successes highlighting those achievements in particular! Currently, Whatcom CC Athletics is ranked #1 in the NWAC Directors Cup (Small School Division) for all sports based on overall performances. The men’s cross-country team won the NWAC Northwest Region Title and placed third overall at the NWAC Championships, while the men’s soccer team advanced all the way to the NWAC Championship game. In addition, both the Orca volleyball and women’s basketball teams advanced to the NWAC Elite 8, while both women’s soccer and women’s cross country qualified for the NWAC Championships.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
