WWU Women's Basketball Coach Carmen Dolfo Recognized for 600th Career Victory

Western Washington University head women’s basketball coach Carmen Dolfo has been recognized by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as part of the 2020 Victory Club.

Dolfo was among a select list of recipients honored for achieving a milestone coaching victory during the 2019-20 season. On January 11, the Bellingham Vikings defeated Seattle Pacific University 73-60 for the 600th victory in Dolfo’s 29-year head coaching career, all at Western.

At the time of the victory, research showed Dolfo became the 36th active women's basketball head coach across all divisions of the NCAA to reach the 600-win mark and the 73rd all-time in NCAA history. Among NCAA II head coaches, she was the 8th active and 17th all-time to join the 600-win club.

The Vikings finished the 2019-20 season with a 22-9 record, advancing to the championship game of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Tournament, and was selected to play in the NCAA Division II Championships for the 17th time in 22 seasons competing at the NCAA level. The West Regional scheduled to be played in Honolulu, Hawai'i was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Dolfo now has a career record of 612-245 in her 29 seasons leading the Vikings, with 21 seasons with 20 or more wins. She is WWU’s all-time leader in coaching victories across all sports.

She will be awarded a plaque from the WBCA for her 600th career victory that will join a crowded shelf featuring her several previous coaching accolades.

We acknowledge that Whatcom County is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples. They cared for the lands that included what we’d call the Puget Sound region, Vancouver Island and British Columbia since time immemorial. This gives us the great obligation and opportunity to learn how to care for our surrounding areas and all the natural and human resources we require to live. We express our deepest respect and gratitude for our indigenous neighbors, the Lummi Nation and Nooksack Tribe, for their enduring care and protection of our shared lands and waterways.
